HISTORY OF THE NORTHEN MAINE RETREAT:

The William Sewall House yoga retreat in Island Falls, Maine; has been entered into the National Register of Historic Places.
Built by Mr. Sewall in 1865, it was the community's first post office. Mr. Sewall, Island Falls' first citizen, met young Theodore Roosevelt there in 1872 and for three successive fall expeditions served as Roosevelt's guide and companion After 1878 Mr. Roosevelt never returned to Island Falls, but he and Mr. Sewall corresponded frequently. In 1886, Mr. Sewall built Theodore Roosevelt's ranch in North Dakota and told him in 1887: "If you go into politics and live, your chance to be President is good."...

"Sewall House was, literally and figuratively, a breath of fresh air. Between the hospitality, delicious food, and the great massage, it was the perfect culmination to a whirlwind honeymoon-allowing us to breathe, connect and love. THE HERITAGE:
William Sewall in his uniform after the civil war
William Sewall in 1885.

Mr. Sewall gained much of his native knowledge from the Indians and was an excellent log man. Donna's great grandfather's chosen location in northern Maine is close to Canada and near Mt. Katahdin, where the sun first hits the East Coast as it rises; you can enjoy the nearby forests, lakes (Mattawamkeag Lake and Pleasant Lake), Baxter State Park and wildlife such as moose and loons. It is here you will be able to experience serenity and solitude, away from the trappings of everyday life. The Yoga retreat offers a warm Bed & Breakfast atmosphere filled with antique treasures and books as well as a lovely fireplace for gatherings in the living room. Yoga DVD's and books are available for use during your stay.
Clear your soul at the historic Sewall House, built in 1865, where yoga instructor Donna Davidge's great grandfather, William Sewall, taught Theodore Roosevelt the wonders, beauty, and healing attributes of nature.

"Every year more blissed out. How can that be? Sewall House just gets better and better. I love Kent's cooking, the beautiful bedrooms and common areas. Inga's flowers and her quiet busyness are only surpassed by the kind, droll personality she brings to your team. Donna, you have the knack for reaching all comers right where they are, making them feel they have locked themselves onto a little piece of what makes your demonstrations so beautiful and satisfying. I just think you are a superlative teacher. Nancy, California
"What a wonderful, restorative week! I feel very lucky that as I searched for my solo holiday I discovered your Sewall House and your warmth and hospitality. The week of great yoga, fabulous healthy food and beautiful surroundings has been the perfect antidote to the upheaval and turbulence I've had over the past six months. I leave you well rested and ready to take on life (and work) again. It's been the most you could ask from a great holiday. Thank you so much for your care this week and all you do year round to make Sewall House such a special place. I very much hope to return. ." Helen, NY City

Small & Friendly Yoga Classes

Kent and Donna are grateful for all the guests who have chosen Sewall House for their Yoga Vacation. We truly enjoy being with those who return, newcomers, mothers & daughters, honeymooners & couples, friends travelling together, singles, families, married folk looking for some solo time, and retirees.

Sewall House has been evolving in times when yoga has been booming all over the world. We believe in evolving with the guests and their needs. Our appoach is simple: "Everyone has the right to be Healthy, Happy & Whole".

We also share tools that our guests can bring home, healthy eating, thinking and being. Donna Amrita Davidge and Kent Bonham continue to fully commit themselves to the historic legacy of the house, it's American Heritage, and their own evolvement within the yoga community and the world.
